Introduction to Permaculture Course - Expression of Interest
Macedon and Mount Macedon Community House in partnership with Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre
Introduction to Permaculture Course
In partnership with Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre, MMMCH will run two Introduction to Permaculture courses this coming Spring and Summer. The first course has been announced and bookings will open soon.
Course Details
12th October - 16th November
6 Sessions on Wednesdays from 9.30am - 12.30pm
Each course will consist of 6 weekly x 3 hour workshops or 4 weekly x 5 hour workshops delivered on site at MMMCH. During the course we’ll introduce lots of ways to grow and harvest food in our local area, including annual & perennial gardens, foraging for wild edibles, growing mushrooms, keeping chickens, making our own compost & fertilisers, understanding zones, sectors & microclimates and building a deeper understanding of our local climate and ecosystems here in Macedon & Mount Macedon. We’ll also explore ways that we can apply Permaculture Principles to build community resilience and strengthen bonds within our small community. Participants will have the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge during the course by participating in the design and construction of the demonstration permaculture garden at the Community House. Ten free places will be made available in each course for residents of Macedon and Mount Macedon in exchange for their contribution to a series of working bees at the Macedon and Mount Macedon Community House.
What is Permaculture?
Permaculture is often thought of as a merging of ecology and agriculture. It’s a system of working with nature, rather than against it, taking natural systems as models to design sustainable environments that meet the needs of both humans and the ecosystems in which they live. More than just an ecological approach to gardening, permaculture is a philosophy and a set of design principles that can be applied to everything from land use to community development. For many people permaculture is about how they can meet their needs from local sources and contribute no waste to the environment.
Places for Volunteers - Expression of Interest
Course tuition will be provided at NO COST for individuals who are keen to give back to the community by participating in, or contributing to, a series of working bees at the Community House in the Spring/Summer of 2022/23. The volunteer commitment is at least 2 x 2 hour sessions. A $20 facility & materials fee will be charged to all participants who sign up to the option of free tuition. There will be no obligation for participants to choose the volunteer option. Participants who are not able to commit to volunteering can choose to 'pay forward' their course tuition of $85 to enable a future volunteer to do the course.
